Teachers Aide Special Newsletter

24 February 2005

Last year was a successful year for PSA members. Goals set for 2004 were achieved and they included:

  • Salary increases of 4% per annum over 4 years fully funded and backdated to 1 July 2004.
  • No job losses. At a time when there were savage cutbacks across the public sector the Association was successful in protecting SAS staff positions.
  • Development of an Induction Programme for all SAS staff.
  • The creation of 660 additional permanent Teachers Aide (Special) positions.
  • Recognition for Long Term Temporary Teachers Aide (Special) for permanent appointment to these new positions.
  • Statewide delivery of PSA training for Teachers Aide (Special).
Other wins for individual Teachers Aide (Special) have been improvements in OH&S conditions; staffing increases; resolving individual disputes about conditions of employment; regular district PSA meetings; successfully fighting members' transfer hassles; and being involved in Unions NSW campaign against bullying in the workplace which has led to some resolution to this major systemic problem.

Note: When the PSA uses the generic term Teachers Aide (Special) in these newsletters we are referring to all categories of Teachers Aide (Special) including those working in preschools.

Campaign News

We are currently negotiating with the Department over the terms of the Teachers Aide (Special) register. After discussions the Department has compromised and has offered to extend a trial register in one metro region and one regional area. This is a significant achievement and means that we may have a state wide register up and running by 2006.

Members have advised the PSA that the Department has breached the joint statement on role boundaries in the provision of support at school for students requiring health care procedures. Members have advised the PSA that at some schools,Teachers Aides are inserting catheters without having applied for special consideration and that guidelines on suctioning are not being followed. These practices breach our joint agreement with the NSW Nurses' Association and the Department and we have taken action to ensure that dangerous practices are not continued. We are currently negotiating an updated agreement that can can be understood by everyone and will continue to campaign around this issue.

Members have also advised us that they believe the Teachers Aide (Special) duty statement is out of date. We will campaign around this issue to ensure that your duty statment is current.

Training Days

Thank you to all the Teachers Aides (Special) who rang the PSA expressing interest in the PSA courses that will be delivered this year.

Because of the time restraints the PSA will be rescheduling the Coffs Harbour training day. Country regional training is for country members.

Due to the high demand more Metro training will be offered to members who reside in the Metropolitan Regional areas.
