TAFE Western Sydney Institute: “Class Support Review”

12 March 2008

On 10 March the PSA met with WSI in a final attempt by the PSA to avoid a dispute in the NSW Industrial Relations Commission over WSI's lack of consultation with you or your union over the "class support review".

Throughout 2007, the PSA had been told that the first part of the "review" would be 'information seeking'. Implementation would not happen until a full process of consultation had happened. The "Class Support Review Research Project 2007" had, in fact, recommended to WSI that the "service/supply model" (also known as the "purchasing model") be implemented, WSI had made that decision, and intended to implement the "service/supply model" from the start of Term 2, 2008.

The outcome ...

  • A meeting of the "Class Support Review Working Party" was scheduled for 11 March, where WSI intended for the review to start to be implemented. This meeting has been cancelled until the first step of a proper process of consultation has occurred.

  • WSI will provide the PSA with:
    1. Minutes from meetings held with class support staff in July 2007 and February 2008, detailing issues that may have been raised;
    2. A breakdown of class support staff employed at each College, including whether they are permanent or temporary staff;
    3. Additional documentation referred to in the "Class Support Review Research Project 2007" which justifies the Project's authors favouring the "service/supply" model.

  • WSI has agreed for the PSA to have paid work time meetings with class support members and staff.
This is a significant outcome for PSA members. As a result of representations, WSI will now be following a clear process of consultation.

What happens next ...

Over the next two weeks, PSA representatives will visit you at your workplace to find out what you think about the review generally, issues that class support staff want addressed, and the "service/supply model" specifically.

We will then meet with WSI again to represent your views.
