Apprentice Cook classification created at Sport & Rec

Executive, 26 May 2008, EX66/08

Decision

"That the Association consents to the variation to the Crown Employees (Department of the Arts, Sport and Recreation - Catering Officers) Award to include the new classification of Apprentice Cook.

Report

The Department of the Arts, Sport and Recreation has provided the Association with a draft variation to the Crown Employees (Department of the Arts, Sport and Recreation - Catering Officers) Award to add the classification of Apprentice Cook.

During last year's s19 review of the award, the PSA and the Department identified the need for a new classification of Apprentice Cook. At that time it was agreed that the parties would negotiate a variation to the award, rather than delay making the reviewed award.

After consideration of other similar award provisions, the parties agreed to express the Apprenticeship rates as percentages of the Total Salary of the Level 4 Catering Officer and to the payment of an Academy Allowance to Apprentices working at the Narrabeen and Jindabyne Sport and Recreation Academies. The award already provides for an Academy Allowance for Catering Officers working at the Academies.

The proposed variation provides for new clauses 4A, Apprentices, and 4B, School Based Apprentices, and the addition of the Apprentice classification and rate to the Academy Allowance table.

The percentages and the current rates are:

Apprentice Cook % of Catering Officer Level 4
(currently $47,053)

Year 1 45% ($21,174)
Year 2 60% ($28,232)
Year 3 75% ($35,290)
Year 4 and Adult rate 85% ($39,995)

Apprentices located at the Narrabeen or Jindabyne Academy will receive an allowance of $1,447 per annum. This allowance will be increased by the same percentage as future salary increases.

The School Based Apprentices clause is the standard clause added to several public service awards in December 2006 in identified trade areas.
