PSA members take the message to Country Labor

02 July 2003

The Labor Party will hold its annual Country Labor Conference at the West Tamworth Leagues Club this coming Saturday and Sunday. They tell us "With the National Party either unwilling or unable to represent rural and regional families, Country Labor has stepped up to the mark".

Members of the Public Service Association will rally outside the West Tamworth League Club on Saturday morning to protest the State Government's plans to cut 1,000 jobs in the Department of Education and Training.

Members will meet outside the club at 8:30 on Saturday morning, to meet conference delegates as they arrive, and invite them to discuss their concerns. This is an issue for the entire community.

Each public service job lost leads eventually to the loss of two or more other local jobs. Each such loss means that down the track three people are denied careers in their community, and must go to urban centres or the coast to find employment, or face the prospect of a lifetime of unemployment or at best underemployment at home.

Before the election the Premier spoke soothing words to country constituents about "Staying in Town". The Public Service Association asks, "stay in town - and do what?" Acting Regional Organiser for the Public Service Association of NSW, Peter Szacsvay, is calling on all PSA and Teachers Federation members in Tamworth, Armidale and Gunnedah districts regardless of which department they work in, and any members of the local community who care about the future of the region, to join the rally to show their support.
