The Evatt Foundation is named in honour of Dr. Herbert Vere Evatt, Member of the NSW Parliament (late 1925-29), High Court Judge (1930-40), External Affairs Minister and Attorney General in the Curtin and Chifley Governments (1941-49), Deputy Prime Minister under Chifley (1946-49), First President of the United Nations General Assembly (1948-49), Leader of the Labor Opposition during the 1950s, and Chief Justice of the NSW Supreme Court (1960-62).

The Evatt Foundation was established in 1979.

ACTU Member Connect

ACTU Member Connect (formerly ACTU Trust) in conjunction with businesses has set up a number of services to benefit union members. These include Members Equity home loans, Virtual Communities computer deals, accrediting of financial advisers, wine club, etc.

Big investors in the home loan and computer schemes are the industry superannuation funds, i.e. the schemes established by unions following the introduction of workforce-wide superannuation.

Labour news & information services

The internet has allowed unions to produce very good news and information services for members. They provide another side to the news, usually in more detail and more explanation.

As well as the PSA's site other recommended sites are:

  • ACTU's Your Rights at Work site contains news, background information, and campaign resources and tasks for our crusade against the Australian Government's anti-employee and anti-union "Workchoices" laws.

  • Union NSW's LaborNet provides daily news from unions around the country.

  • Union NSW's Workers Online is a weekly magazine of news & commentary.

  • LabourStart collates news articles from its network of correspondents around the world. You get the main international news upfront, and then you can look up any country. See what's happening around Australia

  • The ACTU site is an excellent site for OHS, national campaigns & issues, etc. It also has a special section for student projects.

These sites and our PSA links will lead to many other useful sites.

Computer Deals

The PSA gets many queries about available computer deals. There are two types:--

  • those aimed at personal use (new computers), and
  • those aimed at charities, community groups and the disadvantaged (recycled computers)

Personal computers

The two options we can point you to are Virtual Communities and Union Shopper

Virtual Communities offer pre-packaged deals. It's aimed at computer illiterates like me who just want a computer where you just press the on-switch and it works. Good value in my opinion. The computer enthusiasts will say they can get the same or better equipment & programs for less. They probably can but that's generally not much use to the non-experts.

Union Shopper is a buying service -- you tell them what you want and they look for a best price. They offer specials.

When you go to Union Shopper hit the "Current Specials" and "More Offers" icons for the specials - that's where you will find their computer deals..

Virtual Communities --- go to the Products icon.

PSA is an affiliate of Union Shopper. Virtual Communities is independent - it was set up with union support and we have had many dealings with it.

Recycled computer deals

If you after recycled computers (mostly not free) for your community group or disadvantaged colleague/relative, the central reference points is Premier's Memorandum 2003 - 09 -which has a list of refurbisher/distributors, as well as an outline of how the Carr Government's "Reconnect" program operates, and what broadly is available.

Most charge a small sum for the computer or service, some lend computers, some sell, some do both. So check these things out when you contact them.

As well as getting computers from the NSW Government all of these organizations accept computers from businesses and individuals as well.

The recyclers/refurbishers we know about, with notes derived from their websites, are: --

  • The Computerbank Project -- supplies free GNU/Linux systems to low income individuals, community groups and disadvantaged schools. Computerbank branches across Australia are now providing help to low income individuals, families and under-resourced community groups and schools, especially with obtaining computer hardware and training in how to use it. Where possible, Computerbank will try to help the recipients of systems and networks get internet connections. (It is advisable that you contact the branch closest to you to find out if that's possible.)"

The NSW Branch is only contactable by e-mail at President@cbnsw.com.au The people are volunteers and do not have an office or office hours for this work.

  • Charity Computers "is a non-profit project of Canberra City Care. All services are run at cost. Please help reduce landfill and help those in need by donating any computer equipment. "

"We specialise in service to the unemployed, disabled, Seniors Card, or students. We also support Charity and Community organisations. Lessons for beginners and intermediate in all Microsoft programs and Windows for $25 a day. Repairs for $10 an hour. No charge if we can't fix it. No charge to look. Free Helpdesk Service. Computer Loan Service: $50 per year."
